Is being urbanized rapidly. Though being a town of agriculture and local commerce throughout the history, Çeşme has recently started to change especially due to the potential of tourism.
Agriculture: The gums firstly found in Çeşme 6000 years ago deserve seeing. Gum is derived from them and used for making gum jam and unique gum rakı. Gum trees are 1-3 meters height and bloom light green flowers in April-May. They have dense branches looking like bushes and do not patch off in wintertime. The trees have robust, right and round shaped trunks. The trees are covered with dark shells containing resin channels. Fruits that are small and round shaped with colors of red and black grow on them. Gum named mastix is derived from trunks and branches of the trees. Juice comes out as one splits the trunk. The juice gets solid in 2-4 weeks after being collected. It is in the form of easily-broken drops and pieces of pale yellow color. It emits a unigue taste and scent it can be solved in ethonol. Volatile oil, mastisic acid, mastisin and strong substances are included in it. Gum can be used both in cooking and chemistry for paint and medicine production. Doctors used to prepare various medications in the past using gum against diseases ranging from rabidto snakebite, stomach and intestine illnesses lung diseases. After the 10th century, good reputation of gum spread beyond the Chios Island and became known all over the world. In agriculture, not only gum but also Çeşme melon and white onion are other reputable types of food.
Animal Husbandry: Farmers in Çeşme keep Chios Ewe, which is of pure breed. Fishery is the most developed sub sector in animal husbandry. Fishery in Çeşme is getting more and more modern day by day.
Port Trade: Operated by Turkish Maritime Authorities between the years 1992-2003, Çeşme Port was transferred to Ulusoy Gourp for 30 years at the tender implemented in 2003. At Çeşme Port it was started to render services in areas such as domestic and international sea lines terminal, agencies, and port management in connection with machinery, equipment, pilotage, and accommodation services already registered in its current potential. 300 meter length and 8 meter depth, Çeşme Port has the annual capacity of 1060 ships acceptance.
